The EU-funded Legiotex project team has developed a prototype filter inhibiting the growth and proliferation of the Legionella bacterium in both showers and climate control systems.
Compared with current market solutions, the filter would reduce the level of bacterial contamination in water by up to 75%.
Successful exploitation of the technology could result in a reduction of 1,500 cases of Legionnaires' disease and 150 potential deaths each year.
This would also mean annual savings of up to €300 million for the European economy.
