Tomato-based lacquer to preserve canned foods

EU-backed researchers work on a highly innovative and eco-friendly can coating made of tomato waste

An EU-funded project managed by the REA, BIOCOPAC, is developing a highly innovative and eco-friendly coating for canned foods: a tomato peel-based lacquer primarily intended for tinned tomatoes.

The derived organic wastes can be used for the production of biogas.

Results so far are positive: two patents are about to be filed.

The final outcome is expected in November 2013.
