Preventing fatal asteroid collisions with the Earth
The scientific team of NEOShield, an EU-funded project managed by the REA, is working on three different methods to prevent Near Earth Objects (NEOs) such as asteroids and comets from colliding with the Earth. The project, supported by almost €4 million in EU funds, has just started but it has already triggered the interest of the international press.
Corriere della Sera published an article on the project yesterday. The project was featured by the BBC two weeks ago, and last week by Der Spiegel and space.com. TF1 has also issued a video on this EU-funded project.
NEOShield aims at investigating the most efficient ways to protect the Earth from impending collisions and developing mitigation plans and global response strategies. Final research results are expected in May 2015.
Project participants are drawn from a number of European countries as well as Russia and the United States. More
