Protecting our global environment is not a job for individual
governments alone. Effective action is needed to improve the quality of
people's lives while at the same time safeguarding the nature and
combating problems like climate change. This calls for cooperation and
partnership throughout society and at the international level.
The European Union has some 30 years' experience of making policy and
implementing action to conserve our natural heritage. It has achieved
significant results, but much more remains to be done to ensure a cleaner,
healthier environment for European citizens, their children, and
generations yet to come.
