Results of "Continuous Tracking" surveys of the European Union (September and October 1997)
More than 8 in 10 Europeans believe it is important to be involved in creating a better society. For many this conjures up images of the past, with nearly 7 in 10 Europeans wanting a world in which people live by traditional values.
Three in four Europeans place importance on being successful in life but for many this means more than just making a lot of money which half of the European population regards as important. Europeans also place high value on their own self-development. This is particularly the case in the Mediterranean countries.
Concerning topics related to the European Union, the public is most interested in the European currency and citizens" rights. But interest in other issues related to the European Union is also widespread with all topics included in the survey regarded as interesting by more than half of the public.
When it comes to finding out more about the European Union, most people limit themselves to passive activities, like seeing something about the EU on the news or reading something about the EU in a daily newpaper. The most active method - contacting the EU directly - was employed by only 3% of the public in the past three months.
Despite the public"s passive behaviour, more than 8 in 10 Europeans believe that it is important for people to understand how the EU works.
