The Commission held last January the first annual review meeting of the Graphene Flagship, assisted by 14 independent experts in Brussels. The aim of the review was to assess the work of the Flagship in its first year of activities, covering the scientific and technological progress of the project as well as health and safety aspects and the Consortium's coordination and management. In addition to 328 early-career scientists awarded ERC Starting Grants in December, the European Research Council today announces another 47 winners as part of this 2014 call. They will receive funding, worth up to €2 million per project, to build their own research teams and pursue their best ideas at the frontiers of knowledge. Read more

The European Union has been active in the response to the Ebola emergency from the start. Ahead of the high-level conference on Ebola taking place in Brussels on 3 March, the European Commission has published a state of play of its actions. The EU's total financial contribution to fight the epidemic is over €1.2 billion. Read more

But for policy-making to be evidence-based and well suited to the rapidly evolving needs on the ground a variety of questions must be answered and tools provided. Reflecting on what these questions should be, experts highlighted the crucial importance for research outcomes to be well suited to the operational needs of decision-makers in order to ensure a real impact of rural development research. The fight against Ebola has moved one step closer to an effective treatment against the disease. Thanks to EU funding from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) last night announced encouraging evidence that the antiviral drug favipiravir might be an effective treatment against early Ebola disease.
