Summary
History and experience teaches that no single social project can produce tangible change in embedded mentalities and long-term struggles for social integration, intercultural understanding or the universal application of rights and freedoms. However, each civic initiative has the prospect of opening a crack through which new light of hope can be shed. This can be achieved by fostering empowerment of people and trust in change, by inspiring solidarity or through creating partnership and networks of communication that would live on to develop the initial action’s legacy. In both these counts, Outcast Europe delivered handsomely. In detail:- Kick-off meeting: A network of old and new partners came together to finalise project details but also to discuss the situation and the stakes for civil society actors in different countries. The activity helped built trust among organisations of different size, institutional position and experience and inspired them to act together.- The capacity building activity cultivated knowledge, skills and behaviours of people coming from the third sector but also of volunteers and citizens who were not previously engaged in civic activities. Lectures familiarised participants with the ongoing discourse on migration and its cultural and philosophical origins. The workshops provided a clear understanding on different aspects of launching a cultural event (organisation, implementation, promotion, obstacles, stakeholders etc.) and then put this knowledge into practice. Thus, participants acquired both theoretical insights and practical information and skills for carrying out the project tasks.- The exhibitions enhanced intercultural understanding and fostered feelings of empathy while they enabled interaction between host and migrant communities. The participative nature of the exhibition increased the ownership of the people who lent their objects and, thus, the visibility of the project. Side events attracted diverse audiences and enhanced the learning aspect of the project.- The policy debates fostered a better understanding of needs of multiple groups and advanced socially and economically sustainable policies. Policy recommendations derived from an inclusive, bottom-up process involving both local citizens and migrants, that did not only emphasize on effectiveness but also on humanely feelings of empathy and compassion. - The active engagement of Inter Alia in all exhibitions supported the application of the same qualitative standards, the extraction of ideas for the final event and the complementarity of the policy debates in terms of content and recommendations. The van's journey created an attractive side-story that increased the visibility of the project and its results. Activities that took place during the event increased visibility of the project and developed its learning potentials.- Omonia square is the most vibrant spot in Athens and a crossroad for migrants (internal and external) for decades. The exhibition was hosted in the magnificent neo-classical Xenodoheion Bageion, a building that, while struggling with decay, preserves its aesthetic value. The selection of space marked a reclaim of an area where, time and again, hate and racially motivated crime has taken place.- The international conference utilised project findings -citizens' inputs and policy makers' positions- for fostering a cross-sectoral debate on the future of the EU in relation to the integration of migrants involving academics, policy makers and practitioners. Stakeholders got inputs from different countries. Thus, they elaborated policy proposals that took into consideration the views of different stakeholders while offering room for official and unofficial networking.- A learning module, two websites and a book (in greek and english) based on the Outcast Europe exhibition will continue sharing the project's results far and wide long after the end of the funding period.
