Title: Memory Against Inhumanity: people with mental disorders under totalitarian regimes in Europe
Summary
MAI+ will promote a shared and intercultural reflection on what happened to people with mental illness during totalitarianisms in EU, addressing European citizens that nowadays witness other forms of denial of human rights or risk to repeat the same loss of humanitas experienced in the past. MAI+ in Italian actually means never again. Bolzano and Milan will host the Italian version of the travelling exhibition Registered, persecuted, annihilated: The Sick and the Disabled under National Socialism, launched in Germany in 2014 by the German Psychiatric Society DGPPN, which strongly invites to reflect on inhumanity by remembering the specific persecution of the mentally illness. During the 1st symposium in Bolzano representatives of the partner countries, historians, psychiatrists and college students will reflect in a critical way on the appropriate forms of Remembrance when facing the challenges of our present. Students from all Partners (aged 13-15/17-18 years) will be involved in educational workshops aimed at the de-stigmatization of mental illness, with the support of local mental health professionals. In IT younger students will participate in theatre labs and perform theatre plays, older ones will realize short documentaries on the Human-Inhumanity theme. In EL, RO and SI students of secondary schools will realize researches on the condition of the mentally illness during totalitarianisms facing their national history and reconstructing the patients’ biographies. They will also select films from their countries, dated between 30s and 60s, which treat the theme of mental illness. The results of these researches, workshops and video documentations will be presented during the Final Symposium. Documentaries on the “Perception of mental illness” and the question “What is inhumanity?”, produced by Netforpp, will be screened during the 2nd Symposium and travelling exhibition in Milan.
