Title: Sustainability of humanistic values and democratic principles = sustainability of the EU
Summary
In environment of economic and migration crises New Member States/NMS, such is Croatia, are struggling to implement and sustain democratic reforms they went through in the process of negotiation for EU membership and the Candidate Countries/CC - Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, are trying to start reforms and assure that positive democratic changes will be irreversible and not as they turned out to be, in some NMS. At the same time those countries are part of the closed „Balkans’ route“ and were and again can be in situation to witness suffering of large number of people in front of their borders and on their territory and create their own response, as well as participating in EU joint response.This Project, with the serial of consciousness raising events, debates, media outputs and learning opportunities, targets 2 main issues: work on sustainability of democratic reforms in NMS and CC by strengthening public debate on important issues and increasing citizens participation in political life on the national and EU level, and oversight of public policies and practices related to migration crises in participating countries, together with working on encouraging intercultural dialogue and combating intolerance, xenophobia and discrimination.Specific objectives therefor are: (1)To raise awareness and develop new mechanisms, among citizens of the participating countries, related to necessity and difficulties to preserve, as irreversible, democratic reforms that NMS adopted in the process of gaining the membership status and that Western Balkans CC are currently in the process of adoption.(2)To contribute to overcoming of derogation of democratic standards in national perceptions of the crisis and migration in the participating countries and to increase discussion on the added values of EU's intervention and help in such times, hen national responses seem insufficient,by creating fora where common solutions can be discussed in a constructive way and combating intolerance.
