Programme: Europe for Citizens
Identifier: 577425-CITIZ-1-2016-1-HR-CITIZ-REMEM
Title: Civic Activism and Resistance in Retrospect: (post)-Yugoslav region 1980-2016: RETROaktiva
Summary
The project will focus on the afirmation of civic activism and civic resistance in the post-Yugoslav countries in the past three decades, paralleling democratic transition processes aggravated by wars. Through the creation of an 'activist heritage memory-book', a critical overview of activist actions and performances emerging in the region from 1980s until today (feminist initiatives and eco-movements of 1980s, anti-war initiatives of 1990s, more recent forms of civic self-organization related to human and minority rights, LGBT movement, fight for public goods, media freedoms, direct democracy, etc.) the project will facilitate re-thinking of the forms of civic engagement aimed at creating democratic pluralism from socialist times, through war-torn 1990s, to more recent forms in still fragile democracies of the Western Balkans. The project team will include activists, artists, researchers, curators and journalists from Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia, who will explore forms of social activism from national perspectives, allowing a transnational regional interpretation, transgenerational exchange and civic education from today's viewpoint. The main project events include activists and artists workshop, regional conference and the creation of online catalogue. The workshop will gather activists, artists and curators on (re)interpretation of democratic civic engagement as reaction and critical commentary of important social/political events since mid-1980s until today. The results will be presented to the wide audience at the Conference in Zagreb, Croatia, through various formats (panel discussions, debates, Q&A sessions, curated art exhibition and performances). The online catalogue will compile project results, enabling wider audience outreach and a more lasting and sustainable impact. The project will combine a range of methods including research and creative (re)interpretation of forms of civic activism aimed at democratizing society.
