Title: Through Miranda´s Eyes
Summary
In 2001 Veijo Baltzar interviewed Miranda, a Holocaust survivor, and turned her authentic story into a novel and exhibition. Through Miranda´s Eyes (TME) is an 18-month exhibition project, dedicated to reforming educational policies through intercultural dialogue. In WWII about one forth or even half of European Roma got killed in the Holocaust. The world recognized the genocide of Jews and forgot Roma. Topic still remains unknown to general public. With growing number of refugees entering EU states, we need a platform for self-reflection: how to avoid repeating history? 1st international tour of traveling exhibition ”Miranda – the Roma Holocaust” forms the core of the project linking WWII measures with modern societies today bringing forth their fatal similarities. Instead of victims´sufferings, it focuses on the decisions, laws and orders undertaken, reflecting dynamic Roma culture and current conditions of the nation. In Finland Miranda has toured for 4 years (audience > 200 000). It was on display at the National Museum of Finland 9/2013–3/2014 breaking the audience record: “Museum has for the first time ever given an opportunity to a national minority, the Roma, to tell their own story.” We will produce the exhibition in 20 languages. Miranda´s tour will begin in Espoo (FIN) and national tours will be launched in 20 EU-states accompanied with an opening, lectures, online-debates discussing the state of minority cultures in EU, experiential workshops guiding young citizens on to a constructive path of multiculturalism and concerts of Romani music. Drom and partners will realize a virtual exhibition with educational platform for teachers. A political initiative about the exhibition content being integrated in educational programs of each state will travel together with the exhibition encouraging citizens to influence and follow the valuable work. Baltzar´s novel will be published as part of the exhibition.TME results in Miranda´s World Tour 2017-2050.
