Title: EUROPE IS SOLIDARITY: Legrad International Forum of twentyfive communities from ten countries for European solidarity
Summary
Legrad International Forum (LIF) had several interconnected aims and objectives and all of them were met. First, it was a meeting of 25 different communities (amongst them, 18 foreign ones from seven foreign countries bringing together close to 1000 participants and reaching out for almost 75.000 of indirect participants. Second, the program previously anticipated and planned was entirely fulfilled yielding an excellent combination of discussions and debates of serious and hot EU topics with light, international entertainment, building amongst the participants, participant communities and participating countries abetter mutual understanding and bringing them closer to each other – which was also a basic objective of LIF. 1.Participants discussed all hot topics: about solidarity vs national egoism; about unity and solidarity and also about the economic future paths of the EU, as basis for the social development of all the EU citizens. Topics were introduced by lectures which were followed with discussions in smaller groups and finally, the discussion results were again brought and presented to all participants. Regarding the first topic, it was noted that national egoism has become stronger recently (albeit it was always present but it is more outspoken now) and till it does not reach dangerous levels, it is not to be condemned (national egoism has always existed during the history) but there must be a healthy balance between unity and egoism – all countries defend their national interests. Regarding the second topic, the cohesion force between unity and solidarity was underlined by several participants and it was also noted that it is the balance between solidarity and egoism which needs careful balancing. Regarding the third topic (economic future) several options and scenarios were discussed and presented. In discussions, the fundamental role of the economic development as basis for unity and solidarity was also underlined. Fighting climate change and turn to new and renewable energy sources was also noted strongly. All in all, discussions and debates were open and vivid; there were no extreme opinions and discussing partners soon came to basic mutual understanding. Thus, discussion of hot European issues fully met the expectations of the organisers and participants alike. 2.There were cultural performances brought by several participant communities. Multicultural performances helped bring the communities and countries represented closer to each other and making intercultural links amongst them even closer. Performances were met with applodisments and cheers by the participants. All performances had national characteristics (folk songs, folk dances, folk music, etc.) which also reinforced links between the nations. 3.Direct cultural performances were accompanied by several other actions having the same general aim: multiculinary competitions, interrnational morning march along the streets of Legrad, graffiti competition, fishing competition, joint Sunday mass and Saturday night street dance with fire works, etc. yielded and reinforced the same aim: bringing communities and countries closer to each other; building more mutual understanding amongst them.All in all, LIF has met all expectations and has reached all preliminarily set targets. There were more participants from abroad than it had been anticipated (even if, regretfully and due to the unforeseen events and obstacles, Altopiano delegation was forced to cancel its participation literally during the last minutes). Direct participants were also more than envisaged (instead of 720 participants, there were close to 800 persons directly participating in the LIF. Dissemination before and during the Forum (and also after it) was organised well, so the number of indirectly reached participants also met the originally envisaged level.
