The Complete Freedom of Truth (TCFT) is an international sustainable partly youth led programme, with the desire to develop a European tolerant inclusive youth citizenship through culture and the arts. TCFT aims to use cultural and arts activities to provide cultural awareness for young people across Europe by developing their own creativity. Tolerance, inclusiveness, deeper learning and an understanding of the other is at the heart of this creative process. It seeks to transcend language barriers and facilitate the space in which to create emancipatory change, through the use of culture and the arts. TCFT engages with some of the most underprivileged and underrepresented young people in Europe. It aims to facilitate the dialogue between young people from different religions, abilities, ethnicities, cultural and economic backgrounds.

Between May 2015 and April 2017 we have worked with over 600 young people represented by 12 Erasmus + mandated partners and 8 associate organisations in wider Europe. Over 4 million people have been aware of the programme.

The project grew out of working with young people through the arts and culture in a long term process that began in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008. The process grew further through a British Council Creative Collaborations and a Creative Europe project between 2009 and 2012. This was followed by 2 years of intensive pilot work partly funded by YiA, through research with artists and facilitators and a growing number of young people interested in involving others and their own communities. An Erasmus +/Arts Council England pilot project was held in Dorset UK in 2014. We then successfully applied for this 24 month TCFT project which began in May 2015.

Opera Circus as the lead partner organisation worked to bring together a wide variety of partners, some were already known to us, which included cultural and arts organisations, universities and a Comune (a Municipality) in Italy.

There has been a considerable impact on all those who participated, young and older with major transformational change in those participants who developed youth leadership skills. Many young people combated their passivity and hopelessness, aimed for university or employment, embraced European opportunities for young people, - conferences, seminars, events etc., with a variety of other skills training including extensive confidence building. Issues that were tackled included acceptance of alternative gender identity, racial differences and cultural diversity, the challenges in the inferior educational offers across Europe, alternative and social media, political and financial corruption, the lack of true democracy and a scarcity of the youth voice in politics and youth activism. One of the most important subjects explored was the issue of inclusion and access for those with disabilities. The learning outcomes have been embedded in the future work of most of the partnership.

"The first direct workshop with disabled people I have ever had. The woman who led the whole process was impressive. David,a wonderful young man and my enthusiasm grew while we were warming up. Led by 1 disabled boy who gave instructions for the workshop. In our country (Serbia) we can only imagine that. I have received more motivation from Dave than from other people until now. That power which Dave has, awareness and faith are incredible. What is necessary for our success? Who and how can help us in this way? Thanks Dave for this brave question. There were times in the past when I felt uncomfortable with disabled people and now I can say:I know disabled people better, I understand disabled people and I have more empathy. I study pedagogy for 4 years, and I`ve never had contact with disabled people till now. Thank you”.Rade Obradovic Serbia

Dr Dinu Munteanu, of Bournemouth University is now documenting, reviewing and disseminating TCFT’s impact and methodology to analyse how TCFT feeds into current debates around the use of art in community building, reconciliation / conflict transformation and youth engagement. There is a growing recognition amongst researchers and policy makers that more needs to be done to develop an evidence-based framework around the value and impact of the arts in people’s lives. In this sense, the ‘academic shadowing’ that BU provides to TCFT is a crucial step forward, enabling a methodical collection of primary and secondary material around our activities. This will be shared as widely as possible.

"Our hope is that from the development of academic research we can begin to understand different ways in which young people can contribute to society, and for the arts to be taken more seriously as a form of intergenerational and international political, civic and social engagement."
