Summary

The aim of this project is to improve the English academic reading skills of university students, in various disciplines at A2/B1-B2/C1 CEFR level, through a game-based app (called StratApp), that can be accessed through mobile technology. Also, a secondary objective of the app is to activate the needed knowledge and the correct attitude based on insight so that it leads to more reading skills and a responsible improvement of digital competences. The project will also include a WebApp to make it more manageable at the design level (to incorporate the changes that might be necessary after piloting the StratApp). In order to make the app more attractive, it will combine the obvious educational purpose (improvement of academic skills) with playing for fun.The StratApp is a serious game in a virtual scenario combined with deep personalization and contextualization of the learning process, to make the whole process of learning really attractive to students, especially taking into account that they will be using the StratApp in their free time. Although the ultimate users of the StratApp will be students, language teachers also need to be aware of its existence (in order to take it into account when planning their courses), and some other academics can also benefit from it by improving their own ability to read academic English. The different national characteristics of the partners involved will provide not only different views and expertise to the project, but a set of different scenarios in which to pilot the app. It will have a significant impact on the general academic achievement of students all over Europe by improving their ability to read academic English, which will also positively affect their chance of finding good jobs.As the project progresses, know-how and best practices will be noted and publications in open source journals prepared with that information, so other researchers can learn from our rights and wrongs. Also the project webpage will be created which will be updated regularly with the state of the project and related documents for download. It will link to social networks, to begin creating a network of followers in Twitter and Facebook that would later receive the information of the App. For a correct dissemination of the main outputs (App and CMS), press releases will also be written, and brochures for the students designed and printed. The project has the potential to indirectly benefit millions of English learners worldwide. However, we are targeting in the events around 150 main stakeholders (secondary school teachers and university lecturers) that combined could reach up to 125,000 students. Given the distribution of apps, acquiring 1,000 users would be considered a success.
