Broadening horizons for vocational learners: New opportunities abroad with ErasmusPro
Spending a learning period abroad helps young people open up their minds. It can broaden their social, professional and transversal skills, give them a taste for innovation and initiative and help them develop a sense of European citizenship. It is a means to improve the overall performance of the organisations (both VET providers and companies) involved in such practices, by developing sustained internationalisation strategies. It is also helping businesses find the right skills they need to increase their competitiveness. Long-term placements abroad (i.e. longer than 3 months) have an even higher added value for learners in terms of developing job specific and linguistic skills and strengthening their cultural awareness, thus boosting their employability.
Although Erasmus+ has catered to VET learners' long-duration mobility from the start, take-up is so far limited and needs to be promoted and facilitated. Therefore, long-duration vocational placements are now strenghtened through an activity called "ErasmusPRO", as announced in the December 2016 European Commission's Communication on Investing in Europe's Youth.
The new Erasmus+ Call for proposals 2018 includes specific measures within Key Action 1 – Mobility projects for VET staff and learners to enhance the take-up of long-term placements:
- Activities of any duration can be either full work placements, or attendance in a programme run by a VET provider (a school, institute or other organisation providing vocational education and training) offering a combination of school based learning and a work-based component.
- To better prepare the long-term placements and ensure their high quality through a solid partnership, short "Advance Planning Visits" (APV) of staff from sending to hosting organisations (VET providers and/or companies) may be funded.
All VET learners can use the Erasmus+ App to assist their experience and those VET learners going on mobility for 19 days or longer can also benefit from Online Linguistic Support.
