Multilingual classrooms: Erasmus+ is here to help all teachers!
Did you know that since 2014, every second staff-mobility project supported through Erasmus+ in the school education sector has dealt with ‘teaching and learning of foreign languages’ as one of their main topics? Nearly 3,000 projects have been supported, with a total of €57 million, allowing more than 12,000 teachers or other school staff to train or teach abroad on a topic related to languages.
These activities reflect the European Commission’s approach to Multilingualism and give schools the opportunity to do many different things, such as:
- acquire or develop the linguistic skills of school staff, including language teachers or any other staff who may participate in a European project;
- learn or develop new methods of teaching languages - for example making better use of ICT for teaching, experiment with new methods such as drama, or to teach students with special needs;
- teach in a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) environment - meaning teaching subjects such as science, history and geography through a foreign language;
- learn to teach in multicultural classrooms, and make the most of this linguistic diversity.
Erasmus+ also supports cooperation projects for schools to work together around the topic of languages, either through Strategic Partnerships, such as the Travelling words project or through virtual eTwinning projects. To support this, the eTwinning platform offers several ready-made project kits, including the kit Blah…Blah…Blah… Speaking with your neighbour or the E-journal bridges for foreign language learning kit.
