Exchange of experience and comparative analysis for Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Best Practices ICM/CCA

Project Overview

In December 2012, the European Commission launched a two-year project on the Sharing of Best Practices on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in a Context of Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal Areas. The goal of this project, which will run through 2014, is to provide up to date information to increase, share and disseminate Member States' knowledge about Integrated Coastal Zone Management and the linkages with Maritime Spatial Planning in a context of climate change adaptation in coastal areas.

Background

The EU policy context for ICM has evolved in recent years, with the adoption of the Integrated Maritime Policy in 2007, which highlighted tools such as Maritime Spatial Planning, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in 2008. The 2009 Protocol on ICZM to the Barcelona Convention makes ICZM compulsory for coastal Member States in the Mediterranean.

Moreover, the Commission’s White Paper on ‘Adapting to climate change: Towards a European framework for action’, adopted in April 2009, gives special consideration to the coasts and the seas. As is stated in the White Paper, the Commission is committed to developing guidelines on best adaptation practices in coastal and marine areas.

Expected Results

The project’s objectives include the following:
• Gathering information on existing policies and good practice measures for ICM and climate change adaptation
• Supporting the development of guidance to Member States on ICM implementation and adaptation
• Providing updates to the OURCOAST database

The team

This project is carried out by a consortium led by Milieu Ltd, together with Fresh Thoughts Consulting, Ecologic Institute, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and Deltares.

Contribute

We encourage EU officials at national, regional and local levels, as well as other stakeholders, to provide information for this project. Please upload new OURCOAST case studies, in particular on good practices for ICM and climate change adaptation, to the database.

Please send us information on policies, initiatives and measures that address ICM and adaptation in the EU, at national, regional or local levels. We’re interested in case studies on erosion in coastal zones and actions to manage this. And we welcome information on EU conferences and workshops that address this topic. Please send information on these topics to: ICM-adaptation@milieu.be
