EU political deal to curb trade in conflict minerals
The EU has agreed on a framework to stop the financing of armed groups through trade in conflict minerals, after negotiations between the Commission, Council and Parliament. It aims for EU companies to source tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold responsibly. These minerals are typically used in everyday products such as mobile phones, cars and jewellery.

MEXICO
First round of EU-Mexico negotiations of the Global Agreement
Delegations of the European Union and Mexico met in Brussels 13-14 June for the first round of negotiations to modernise the Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement (Global Agreement), dating from 2000. During this round, the delegations focused on working methods and organisation of work, but engaged also in a first exchange on the content of the modernised agreement. Given the positive talks in all areas, the Parties agreed to work to prepare the second negotiating round to be held in Mexico City in the autumn.

EU signs Economic Partnership Agreement with Southern African countries
This development-oriented agreement is the first of its kind with an African region pursuing regional economic integration. The European Union and six countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) signed on 10 June an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the first of its kind between the EU and an African region pursuing economic integration. The signature took place in Kasane, Botswana.

Report of the first round of free trade talks between the EU and the Philippines
The first round of talks between the European Union and the Philippines took place between 23 and 27 May 2016 in Brussels. The objective was to lay the groundwork for a future free trade agreement that, once concluded, will constitute an additional building block towards a region-to-region agreement between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

CHINA
China lifts its import ban on bovine and ovine products from Denmark, France, Germany and the United Kingdom
The decision – preceded by the joint efforts of the European Commission and EU Member States – was announced by the Chinese Minister of Agriculture Minister HAN Changfu during the visit of EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan to China the week of 30th May. The Commission welcomes the lifting of this ban that should now quickly allow for real trade to start taking place and looks forward to seeing China open its market for these safe products from the rest of the EU in the near future.
