Denmark’s mission to build a world-leading innovation system

Denmark is a trendsetter: from furniture design, to urban cycling and the growing international popularity of ‘hygge’. The country is an ‘innovation leader’ according to the European Innovation Scoreboard, and has an admirable track record in research and innovation (R&I). The Danish government is now keen to see its knowledge-based innovation system rank among the global elite.

Denmark is currently one of the few EU Member States to have reached Europe’s 2020 target for R&D intensity, 3% of GDP, and has the ambition to become a world leader in turning research into innovation – optimising its system for knowledge-based innovation for the benefit of society as a whole.

Based on the Danish Government’s national strategy for research and innovation, ‘Denmark – Ready to Seize Future Opportunities’ (December 2017), the Danish Minister of Higher Education and Science has asked the Horizon 2020 Policy Support Facility to carry out a ‘Peer Review of Denmark’s Research and Innovation (R&I) System’.

PSF experts visited Denmark for their first fact-finding mission on 4-7 March, and will work until the end of Summer to assess how Denmark can best organise its efforts on knowledge-based innovation in line with international best practices. The panel will then provide concrete recommendations on how to build the most effective bridges between research-based knowledge and its application in business and society.
