Commission champions ocean sustainability at business summit

A sustainable future for the world's oceans will require the full backing of the business community. This was the main message shared by João Aguiar Machado, Director-General of the European Commission's department for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, at the Sustainable Ocean Summit in Rotterdam.

Mr Aguiar Machado used his opening speech to highlight the role for business in supporting the European Union's initiative for safe, secure, clean and sustainably managed oceans, launched on 10 November. He also set out how the EU is working to remove bottlenecks to ocean-based growth and to overcome reluctance from traditional funding sources to invest in new activities.

The theme of the conference, organised by the World Ocean Council (WOC), was "Ocean 2030: Sustainable Development Goals and the Ocean Business Community". The WOC brings together diverse ocean business communities (shipping, fisheries, oil & gas, aquaculture, offshore renewables, tourism, seabed mining, marine technology, manufacturers, law, retailers, insurers, finance, etc.) to develop global ‘platforms’ on cross-cutting ocean business and sustainability challenges.
