In this new issue of FET newsletter, we present all our activities to promote excellent science in the digital age (see our brochure), with stories and achievements from projects. This time we have a special focus on some recent examples of market applications resulting from EU funded projects.
The first FET Open Grant Agreement has been signed in REA, and an InfoDay in July will be the opportunity to network before the last 2015 cut-off date: 29 September.
Latest Flagship news includes the HBP launching call for proposals on "Systems & Cognitive Neuroscience", and the Graphene Flagship presenting their research in a workshop in European Parliament. The EC and the Graphene consortium have concluded recently a Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) that sets out the blueprint for the Graphene Flagship for the whole duration of H2020.

Excellent Science in the Digital Age
The brochure highlights some of the many EU initiatives and co-funded research projects which address scientific excellence. EU policies and investment in these initiatives foster scientific progress and helps seed new markets, while strengthening European innovation and completing the Digital Single Market.
6 July 2015 - Brussels (Belgium)
Information Day on FET Open call
FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) organises an Information Day for the FET Open call for Research and Innovation Actions. Next call cut-off date is 29 September 2015.
FET Funding Opportunities
Human Brain Project - Call for proposals: "Systems & Cognitive Neuroscience"
The Human Brain Project (HBP) is looking for partners who will join the project's next phase, which will be funded under Horizon 2020. Interested researchers are invited to submit proposals for a challenging research project in "Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience".
H2020 FET calls: proposers' feedback
High quality evaluation and valuable feedback to proposers are important features for FET. Therefore we have run a survey among FET proposers to collect their feedback on the FET evaluation process and perception of a number of novelties introduced in H2020 FET calls.
FET at conferences & workshops
EU and US teaming up in 2D Layered Materials and Devices
Researchers and funding organisations came together in Arlington, USA, to discuss the topic of one of the FET Flagships: graphene and other 2D materials. While exchanging thoughts on the most exciting topics that are now receiving the attention from the brightest minds in the field, it also served to discuss how these could benefit from EU-US collaboration.
Report on Open Science consultation
Final report of public consultation on Science 2.0 / open science
Science 2.0 also known as open science is a new approach to science that refers to the transformation and opening up of science through ICT, and which uses information-sharing and collaboration made possible by network technologies. The report presents the key findings of the public consultation and the emerging policy recommendations.
Focus on market applications from EU projects
The EUNOIA project paves the way for the start-up KINEO
Funded as part of the Global Systems Science (GSS) initiative in FP7, the project EUNOIA investigated a variety of non-conventional sources of geolocated data — such as mobile phone records, GPS tracks, smart card data, data from Internet social networks or credit card transactions, among others — to extract useful information about activity and mobility patterns in urban areas.
Forgot your password? The SME Intrinsic-ID proposes a device fingerprint to authenticate your access.
Strong and reliable authentication is key in our digital society. The existence of Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs), the technology that implements the electronic fingerprint of devices, has been demonstrated by the PUFFIN FET Open project in standard devices. The applications for mobile phones are now implemented by its SME partner Intrinsic-ID.
Time-of-Flight based on Single-Photon detectors: a long journey from the lab to the market
Starting from a "crazy" and risky research idea explored in a Future and Emerging Technologies project, a team successfully transferred the developed technology, now used for a wide set of applications (from better mobile phones images to medical imaging), to industry and to a start-up.
Projects' news & stories
Why is my computer heating up so much?
Computers take up too much energy. Present day strategies are based on incremental improvements in energy efficiency. If we want to realize the internet-of-things scenario or to build the exascale computers of the future we need new disruptive ideas that cuts orders of magnitude of power.
Researchers can benefit from €4m fund to cover the costs of Open Access publishing for post-grants publications
The OpenAIRE2020 project has launched its Gold Open Access (OA) Pilot to stimulate publishing in OA journals in Europe by providing funding to cover all or part of the costs of post grant OA publications arising from projects funded under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7).
