Scientific input to the integrated management of sea basins (19 May, 11.05-13.00)

In the past years, marine science and oceanography have achieved considerable progress, through observation and modelling, in understanding the impact of human activities on the marine environment in sea basins. This has resulted in important results that are relevant for policy makers who seek to promote an integrated management of sea basins, with a view to ensure their sustainable development. The workshop will present these results in simple terms to policy makers who often don't know them well, by focusing on two areas: the Baltic (results from the BONUS programme) and the Mediterranean (results from the SESAME project). It will also give the perspective of the industry and in particular that of the maritime transport and aquaculture sectors, showing how they react to the environmental challenges and the competition for space. Finally a speaker will give the policy makers' perspective on the integrated management of sea basins and the interface with the science and industry stakeholders.

The workshop will therefore highlight the importance of the science / policy / industry triangular cooperation for the integrated management of sea basins.
