Letter to stakeholders

The next European Maritime Day will be celebrated in Gothenburg on 21 and 22 May 2012. The High-level Conference "Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and the coasts"1, organised in partnership with the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, the Region Västra Götaland, the City of Gothenburg and the European Commission, will take place on the beautiful premises of the Eriksbergshallen, an old shipyard building at the water’s edge which houses today an event hall featuring innovative architecture and definitive Scandinavian design http://www.hotel11.se/Hem__1033.html.

European Maritime Day Conference will focus on "blue growth" in order to show how the great opportunities offered by the seas – raw material for food, renewable energy, efficient transports and recreation – could spur new social and economic benefits. It will be an occasion to reflect, at high level, on cross-sectoral themes and policies affecting the seas and coasts. In particular, we will be looking at how bio-economy and bio-technology can bring effective results to our major societal and environmental challenges, what we can do to support innovation in terms of the actual application of research results and bring it to the market to stimulate growth and jobs. A plenary discussion on the way we manage our seas and how the current reforms and developments will trigger economic growth and jobs will also be held. Additionally, specific sessions on renewable marine energy, sustainable transport, maritime surveillance and regional strategies will be organised.

You are very welcome to get involved in European Maritime Day in the following two ways:

1) You can apply for organising an event on 22 May, in Gothenburg, Sweden, on the same premises of the European Maritime Day Conference.

On 22 May you may organise a workshop open to the public (thereafter referred to as "the event").

Your event will be your own responsibility from start to finish – from conceptualisation of the programme, to choosing and inviting speakers (You will have to take charge of possible transportation and accommodation costs of speakers as well as any other additional requests speakers might have), to making sure that your  target audience participates in your event.

The conference premises will be made available to your organisation free of charge, and catering (lunch and coffee break in the afternoon) will be available as well. Your event will be included in the programme of European Maritime Day.
No interpretation will be provided.

Applications for organising an event at the Eriksbergshallen in Gothenburg must be submitted online at the link

before 15/01/2012

The possibility to hold your event is subject to a qualitative assessment of your proposal. This assessment will take into account the following criteria:

  • The way your event addresses the integration of policies affecting the seas and coasts;
  • The objectives of the event regarding the main theme of the Conference;
  • The selected speakers of your event;
  • The communication activities and other actions foreseen to ensure stakeholders' participation and outreach to target audiences;
  • The representativeness of your organisation in terms of its European dimension.

Please note that a maximum of twenty-one events of 1.5 hour each can take place. You are strongly advised to consult with your networks in advance to maximise the possible inputs from other stakeholders and build your proposal on an enlarged basis to better meet the quality assessment criteria. The European Commission will not get involved in any aspects of the organisation of your event.

Only the proposals submitted before the deadline and filled via the online form (aforementioned link) will be taken into consideration. You will be informed 6 weeks after the deadline if your event proposal has been accepted.

2) You can apply for organising an event at national, regional and local level in an EU Member State to take place on the week 21-25 May. A broad range of activities can be organised to show, promote, discuss and celebrate the added value of an integrated approach in addressing issues and policies related to the sea.

You can organise events such as workshops, performances, press visits highlighting maritime projects and activities, guided tours and open door days at ports, harbours, museums and aquaria, environmental actions, university or school projects. Your event will be highlighted on the European Maritime Day 2012 website and you will be entitled to use the European Maritime Day 2012 visual identity.

Your proposal will be subject to a qualitative assessment, the main criterion being the contribution of the event to the goals of the Integrated Maritime Policy. More detailed guidelines will be sent to successful applicants. You will be informed if your proposal has been accepted within three weeks following the deadline.

Applications for organising an event across Europe must be submitted online at the link
