Acting Head of Representation -  Ms Diane SPITERI

Mrs Joanne Pulis – Secretary to the Head of Representation/Web Editor

Joanne joined the Commission in January 2002 as a receptionist after working for a holiday company as a Customer Services Representative for 13 years. Today, she is the Principal Secretary and the Secretary to the Head of Representation. Her main responsibilities are to keep the daily agenda of the head of representation, making appointments, travel arrangements, registering of incoming and outgoing mail, diplomatic pouch, managing of IT problems and the Representations website. She enjoys the fact that she is constantly busy, always on the go with things to do. She also appreciates the opportunity the job gives her, both through the vast training the Commission offers and that of meeting people of different cultures.

Joanne has lived in Malta since 1989 and is she married to Giovanni.

Mrs Lilian Vassallo – Media Assistant

Lilian has been working at the Representation since 1993. Her career spans from years in government service and in the tourism industry. Her responsibilities at the Representation include the distribution of press releases and other relevant information to the media, co-ordinating the organisation of cultural events, such as the European Film Festival; and of information visits to the European Commission by journalists and opinion-moulders; as well as and answering to enquiries by interested groups and the public in general.

Her main interests are drama activities which take her mind off the daily working stress! She also enjoys travelling, a hobby that she shares with her husband.

Mrs Julia Abid – Communication & Information Assistant

Julia has been with the Commission since March 2002 when the office was originally still a Delegation.  She enjoys working in a multi-cultural environment where every working day is varied, interesting and fulfilling and which keeps her in daily contact with local citizens and colleagues in Brussels.  As well as helping to organise initiatives, activities and events locally, Julia also participates in Seminars abroad.  She is the local correspondent for the Europe Direct Relays. 

Julia has dual Maltese and British nationality and has been living and working in Malta for the past 15 years since emigrating from the UK where she worked for some years.

Mr Andrea Scorcia - Communication & Information Assistant

Andrea joined the Representation in December 2011. He moved to Malta from Italy three years ago, and has previously been working at St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity and at the Culture and Audiovisual Unit (OPM).

As Communication & Information Assistant, he helps the Representation in organising events and initiatives, handling enquiries from the general public and managing the website.

Trained in cultural anthropology and religious studies, he is passionate about travelling to remote places, having developed a special obsession for Mongolia, Siberia and Central Asia. Andrea is also an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying climbing the crags and cliffs of the archipelago and exploring its coasts by kayak.

Mr Brian Buhagiar - Language Officer

Brian started working as a translator in the Maltese language department of the European Commission in Luxembourg on the 1st of August 2004. Later on he became an official and served as the Deputy Head of Unit MT03.
 
Since the 1st of October of 2010 he has been posted in the Representation of the European Commission in Valletta. Besides translating, his latest role involves the promotion of language-learning and translation in Malta..

Ms Deborah Jane Evans- Head of Administration

Jane joined the European Commission in 1996 as an editor/proof reader for the Official Journal in the Publications Office in Luxembourg.  Subsequently, between 1999 and 2004, she worked as a financial correspondent for DG ENV in Brussels, providing administrative and financial support on diverse projects including the eco-label and climate change.  Subsequently she transferred to PMO.6 as a financial officer for the Sickness Insurance Office and continued to work for PMO in Brussels in the Departure Desk of the Pensions Unit.

As Head of Adminstration since September 2010 she enjoys the daily challenges of the financial and administrative tasks in the Representation in Valletta.

Her first degree was in English literature followed by a conversion course in Law.  Having passed the UK Solicitors' Finals Examinations she then completed a Masters degree in European Judicial studies in Luxembourg.

After university she taught English as a foreign language in Spain and Greece.  Her interests include salsa dancing, reading, travelling and the cinema.

Ms Sara Hazzard – Accounting Assistant

Sara became the accounting assistant at the Representation in July 2003 and enjoys the healthy challenges the role demands. She has a varied background in administration and management with experience in small and medium-sized business, both in Malta and abroad. Travel is a strong feature in her life, living abroad at times growing up, travelling widely after university for 2 years and leading her to Malta, living here since 1992.

For over 10 years, she worked as a scuba diving instructor (PADI MI) and ‘till today continues to dive recreationally. She holds the diving around Malta and Gozo in very high esteem, having fulfilled a personal goal of diving some of the best sites in the world, something she hopes to continue as long as she can. What Sara enjoys most about her job at the Representation is its variety and the contribution that can be made to the continuing story of Europe.

Sara makes the most of the outdoor-living Malta offers and devotes time to animal welfare and environmental issues with her voluntary commitments to the Marine Rescue Team Unit of Nature Trust (Malta) and the Animal Watch newsletter of SPCA (Malta).

Ms Dorianne Coleiro - Accounting Assistant

Dorianne joined the European Commission DG JLS on 1st December 2004 as an administrative assistant. After 1 year and 9 months she changed unit within the same DG to a post of an administrative assistant/ financial verifier. After another 1 year and 8 months, she changed DG and joined DG COMM Representation in Malta mainly working as a financial initiator.

After work she likes to keep herself busy with drama, crafts, playing music and anything else which is artistic.

She describes the time spent in Brussels as a nice experience and still misses deeply the land of beer, chocolate and frites.

Mrs Marthese Fenech – Driver/Service Clerk

Marthese joined the office on the 16th November, 2006 as a driver/service clerk after working in sales for 16 years, where she was self employed.  She also worked for a few years in the hospitality industry. She enjoys her job at the Representation because it gives her the opportunity to learn various tasks within different sections of the Representation, that is, when she is not driving the Head of Representation.  Working at the Representation also gives her the possibility to widen her knowledge of the European Union.

Marthese likes reading but also loves travelling together with her husband Joe and their son, Andrea Luca.
