Final NCW Conference of EU Flagship Project - European Year for Volunteering 2011

On Friday 9th March, the Head of Representation participated in a panel discussion as part of a conference on Strengthening and Encouraging Volunteering.

Mr Bugelli spoke about the rationale behind the choice of volunteering as the main theme for the European Year 2011. He pointed out the relevance of volunteering both as a means to strengthen the social fabric and as a complement to economic activity. "Individuals can make a difference, as many have done in the past by putting forward their ideas, their efforts, and even in certain cases, their lives, and thanks to whom today's society owes much of its wellbeing", Mr Bugelli said.

The National Council for Women organised the event in partnership with Nature Trust, the Commission for Domestic Violence, and the National Youth Council. This Flagship Project sought to create awareness for young people, public entities, elderly citizens and voluntary organisations to understand each other more and to get closer by sharing their talents, expertise and experiences in a voluntary environment.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including European Commission Vice-president Antonio Tajani. On March 14, the torch will be taken to the Vatican to be blessed by Pope Benedict XVI, before arriving at the shrine on March 20.
