On 25 March, EU leaders came together in Rome to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, which were signed on this day in 1957. Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, participated in the Rome Summit, where a number of events were organised to mark the occasion and to reflect on Europe's common future.

At the end of March a number of meetings took place within the remit of the European Semester. The European Commission attributes great importance to consulting key local stakeholders during all stages of the European Semester process. This particular stage in the process follows the publication of the Country Report for Malta (22 February) and anticipates the much awaited publication of the proposed Country Specific Recommendations due to take place later in spring.

On 16 March, the European Commission presented its latest report on the Rapid Alert System for dangerous products. In 2016, the system was more actively used by national authorities, who removed more dangerous products from stores. However, more and more of the dangerous products notified in the Rapid Alert System are sold on online platforms. This is why the Commission has stepped up its cooperation with Amazon, Ebay and Alibaba to tackle more actively potentially unsafe or non-compliant products from their websites which sell to consumers in the EU.

As announced in President Juncker's 2016 State of the Union speech, the European Commission presented on 15 March a White Paper on the Future of Europe, which forms the Commission's contribution to the Rome Summit of 25 March 2017. As we prepare to mark the 60th anniversary of the EU, we look back on a peace spanning seven decades and on an enlarged Union of 500 million citizens living in freedom in one of the world’s most prosperous economies.
