Europe is making a difference. An initiative funded under the European Social Fund focusing on the basic training on the use of the computer, internet and email was launched this week by the Minister for Investment, Industry and Information Technology, Austin Gatt. This initiative, called First Step, is aimed in particular to all those who are in danger of losing their current job due to the pressures from globalisation and Malta eroded competitiveness in low skilled jobs.
The initiative was announced during a press conference where a study on the supply and demand in the labour market for it jobs was presented. The study showed that the interest in technology related jobs in Malta is on the increase. The recent investment in SmartCity, which will create a number of new jobs in this area of information technology was cited as one of the possible reasons. The First Step initiative would help people get the basic knowledge that will enable them to launch a career in the IT related industry. Around 250 workers are expected to benefit from this scheme every year.
