Representation in Malta




The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission reached on Monday 29 May a political agreement on the WiFi4EU initiative and its funding which supports installing free public Wi-Fi hotspots in local communities across the EU: in public squares, piazzas, parks, hospitals and other public spaces.

EU Green Week 2017

Monday 29 May marked the start of the 17th annual EU Green Week. This year the focus is on green jobs. EU environmental policies are creating green jobs and contributing to economic and social growth across the EU and across sectors. These Commission's flagship policies such as the Circular Economy package or promoting the Paris Climate Agreement create significant employment opportunities.


The 2017 European Semester, the EU's annual cycle of economic policy guidance and surveillance, is nearing its completion with the publication of the Commission's Country-Specific Recommendations (CSRs) to Member States, including Malta. CSRs provide tailored guidance to individual Member States on how to boost jobs, growth and investment, while maintaining sound public finances.

EU Defence

Feeding into the discussion on the future direction of the EU at 27, on Wednesday 24 May the Commission held an orientation debate on the future of European defence.

More than 85% of bathing water sites monitored across Europe in 2016 met the most stringent ‘excellent' quality standards — meaning they were mostly free from pollutants harmful to human health and the environment, according to the annual bathing water quality report published today.


On Monday 22 May, the European Commission issued the Country Specific Recommendations for 2017 for all Member States, including Malta. The 2017 Country-Specific Recommendations addressed to Malta are the following:
