Students recite poems for the European Day of Languages

Forty students from St Ignatius College Secondary School filled the main hall of Europe House, Valletta to recite poems and songs in a variety of different languages. The eager students flaunted their skills in Maltese, English, Italian, German French and Spanish.

    The youngsters exhibited their multilingual skills by swapping between different languages mid-sentence in a short play about learning languages in the classroom. Another group presented a song and dance routine in Italian. Education Minister Evarist Bartolo attended the event and congratulated the students on their willingness to learn and warned of the dangers of limiting their language knowledge .

    Brian Buhagiar, the Language Officer at the EC Representation, gave the welcome speech. The event was also attended by other language stakeholders. The distinguished guests included Dr Bernard Micallef, Faculty of Maltese at the University of Malta; Dr Claire Vassallo, English Speaking Union of Malta; Mr Martin Micallef, Società Dante Alighieri; Ms Karen Camilleri, Alliance Franciase de Malte; Ms Antoinette Zammit Bugeja, Spanish Department at University of Malta; Ing Arthur Ciantar, President of German Maltese Circle; Ms Maria Camilleri, Head of School - Mariam Al Batool; and Mr Gu Hongxing, Director, China Cultural Centre.
