European Maritime Day is an annual event gathering politicians and stakeholders from all relevant sectors to discuss on maritime issues. Malta is hosting this year's edition, which will take place on 21-22 May. The main theme of the year is 'coastal development and sustainable maritime tourism'. Experts from all over Europe will discuss how to drive the tourism industry forward and maintain its position not only as a sector for sustainable growth, but also as a crucial driver for the wider economy and a key contributor to the EU's Blue Growth agenda.

The European Commission is co-organising the event in partnership with the Maltese Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business, and the Maltese Ministry for Tourism. For the occasion, many inititives were also organised locally by Local Councils and other entities all around Malta.

Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, will give a key-note speech to open the conference on Tuesday 21 May, alongside ministers from Malta and Sweden. The European Maritime Day conference will then continue throughout Wednesday 22 May.
