Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable.

The Juncker Plan has backed a European Investment Bank (EIB) loan agreement with ABN Amro, a Dutch bank, to unlock EUR 150 million in financing to support green shipping. The loan will support the refurbishment of older shipping units and the construction of new ones that so as to reduce the sector's carbon footprint.

On 20 April, EU Maritime Ministers signed a Declaration on Blue Growth, reaffirming their political commitment to further grow EU's sustainable blue economy. The Declaration was adopted at the Informal Ministerial Conference on Blue growth, Ocean Governance in the EU and the Mediterranean, Innovation and Nautical Tourism, co-chaired by Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella in Malta.

On Wednesday 19 April, the European Commission launched a new initiative for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Western Mediterranean region. The region covers economic hubs like Barcelona, Marseille, Naples and Tunis. It also includes tourist destinations like the Balearic Islands, Sicily and Corsica.

The EU has adopted a set of legislation ensuring that passengers have rights when they travel by plane, train, ship and bus. However, when different modes of transport are used one after the other to complete one journey, passengers' rights are not guaranteed for their entire multimodal journey. This is due to the fact that current EU passenger rights legislations, which regulate each mode separately, cannot be applied effectively in the context of multimodal passenger transport.

On 10 April 2017, the European Commission published the 2017 EU Justice Scoreboard which gives a comparative overview of the efficiency, quality and independence of justice systems in the EU Member States. Its aim is to assist national authorities to improve the effectiveness of their justice systems.
