The Gozo Business Chamber is one of the three entities chosen to host Europe Direct Information Centres in Malta and Gozo for the period 2013-2017, bringing the total of such centres in the European Union to 487. The other two centres, located within Malta, are the Europe Direct in Balzan, situated within the Local Council Association premises, and the Europe Direct in Valetta, located in the GRTU- Malta Chamber of SMEs (General Retailers and Traders Union).
Europe Direct Information Centres (EDIC) form part of the Europe Direct information network, a free information service on the EU, and complement the role of the European Commission and EU Representations in disseminating information, serving as a bridge between EU institutions and public. Their main tasks include providing general information and advice in all areas related to European issues (awareness-raising events, websites, publications, engagement with local media) and handling public enquiries in person or by phone/e-mail, with particular attention to local social needs.
During the short ceremony being held, Mr Martin Bugelli, addressed the attendees giving them information about EDIC’s aims and purposes, pointing out the importance of the European citizens getting direct information about the EU and its functions. On the other side, the president of the Gozo Business Chamber, Mr Michael Brech, stated the GBC’s commitment to ensure that the Gozitans will have equal opportunities available to them in their locality.
The centre will be operating Monday to Friday between 09:00h and 13:00h and plans are already on hand for special events to be held to reach various sectors of Gozitans.
