The European Commission has concluded that Ireland granted undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion to Apple. This is illegal under EU state aid rules, because it allowed Apple to pay substantially less tax than other businesses. Ireland must now recover the illegal aid.

On Wednesday 14 September, the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, will deliver his State of the Union address at the European Parliament. The speech will be followed by a plenary debate. The State of the Union address traditionally kick-starts the dialogue with Parliament and Council to prepare the Commission Work Programme for 2017.

Following President Jean-Claude Juncker's announcement on the establishment of a European Pillar of Social Rights in September 2015, the European Commission has taken concrete steps to push forward for a fair and truly pan-European labour market.

The European Commission has found plans by Malta and Luxembourg to support power generation from renewable sources to be in line with EU state aid rules. The schemes will increase electricity produced from renewable sources, in line with EU energy objectives, without unduly distorting competition.

Once again, this year's Skolasajf has been organised through the collaboration of the Foundation for Educational Services, the European Commission Representation in Malta and MEUSAC. Around 11,500 students aged three years upwards registered for this year's Skolasajf which was held between the 13 of July and the 7 of September.

The Commission has found Malta's plans for setting up a development bank to be in line with EU state aid rules. The bank will carry out non-commercial activities to facilitate access to finance for SMEs and to support infrastructure investment, without unduly distorting competition.

For nearly two years the large and unprecedented flow of refugees from war-torn or underdeveloped countries to the European Union has heavily impacted Europe's political and social life. Providing food and shelter for the masses of refugees reaching the EU, familiarising them with the new realities and cultural differences as well as supporting them through their integration process was and still is a major challenge which the concerned Member States could only face thanks to the spontaneous and overwhelming support of citizens and civil society in general.

The Embassies of France, the Netherlands, Germany and the European Commission Representation in Malta have joined forces to launch an image competition for children on the occasion of the European Climate Action Days 2016.
