As part of this year’s Single Market Week activities, the Malta Business Bureau (MBB) and the European Commission Representation in Malta will be organising a half-day conference on Tuesday 16th October entitled ‘European Single Market: Discerning the Opportunities and Challenges for Maltese Business’. The event is being held at the Hotel Phoenicia.

Celebrating 20 Years of the Single Market: What it means for Maltese Business
During this event, the MBB will reveal the findings of a study that it conducted with the support of MISCO International, whereby key local SMEs and micro-enterprises discussed their experience of operating within the single market following Malta’s accession into the EU. The study includes feedback given by companies emanating from Malta’s main four economic sectors: Services, Import/Distribution, Manufacturing/Export, Hospitality and Tourism Services. Based on the feedback provided by these companies, the MBB will also be communicating a set of recommendations that it will be further discussing with high officials at the European institutions on behalf of Maltese business in the coming weeks.

The conference will include a panel debate with the participation of Charmaine Hogan – DG Markt, EU Commission; Gordon Cordina – Senior Lecturer, FEMA Department University of Malta; Kevin J Borg – Director General Malta Chamber; and Andrew Agius Muscat – CEO MHRA. The panel will be moderated by Stefano Mallia – Maltese employers’ representative at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Charmaine Hogan who is also the European Commission’s single market ambassador to Malta will be delivering a key note speech on the European single market’s future agenda.

The purpose of this conference is also to allow further discussion through a number of specific workshops for each of these four sectors which will serve to gather more feedback and substantiate these recommendations. The active participation of local businesses in these workshops will be important for the MBB’s lobbying efforts in the EU through its Brussels-based office.

During the conference, the MBB will be launching a publication commemorating the 20th anniversary of the European single market, which highlights the achievements and shortcomings of this largest economic trading bloc in the world, catering for 500 million consumers.

The conference will be held at the Hotel Phoenicia at 08:45 on Tuesday 16th October.
