Visit to Malta by EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki

EU Commissioner responsible for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Maria Damanaki was on a one-day official visit to Malta for talks with government officials on the EU's fisheries policy and other maritime issues.

    Commissioner Damanaki held talks with Environment Minister Dr Mario de Marco, with Maritime Affairs Minister Dr Austin Gatt, with Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs, Mr George Pullicino and with Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi.  She also visited the Malta Aquaculture Research Centre at San Lucjan in Marsaxlokk.  Commissioner Damanaki and Minister Pullicino held a joint press conference following their bilateral meeting at Villa Francia, Lija.

    Commissioner Damanaki also visited the House of Representatives at the Palace in Valletta where she addressed the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives with a speech on EU Maritime and Fisheries policies – towards sustainability and growth.

    Later in the afternoon, Commissioner Damanaki met with fisheries and aquaculture stakeholders at Dar l-Ewropa.  The meeting was chaired by the Head of the European Commission Representation, Mr Martin Bugelli.  The stakeholders represented included the National Fisheries Cooperative, the Fisheries Cooperative, the Federation of Maltese Aquaculture Producers and the Federation of Amateur Fishermen Associations. Commissioner Damanaki appreciated the participants' input on the realities of their interests.

    Her last meeting was with Dr Alan Deidun from the Physical Oceanography Unit of the University of Malta who gave a presentation of the Panacea Project - two short documentaries on the assets of our marine protected areas, Dwejra and Rdum Majjiesa, also at Dar l-Ewropa.
