The 9th May is an important date for all Europeans. Europe Day marks the anniversary of the 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations a thing of the past.

9 May marks the most important recurrence for all Europeans: Europe Day. The date is the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration', considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union. To mark this anniversary, the European Commission Representation in Malta is launching the Europe Day Slogan Facebook Competition. As of tomorrow calling, texting or surfing online from another Member States (roaming) will get cheaper. When travelling in the EU, mobile devices users will only pay a small amount on top of their domestic prices: up to €0.05 per minute of call made, €0.02 per SMS sent, and €0.05 per MB of data (excl. VAT).

Today, following an agreement by social partners on working conditions in the fishing sector, the European Commission is translating the agreement into a legal proposal for a Directive. In 2013, the EU social partners in the fishing sector reached an agreement, which proposed to align EU law with the "Work in Fishing" Convention 2007 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Once adopted by the Council, this directive will implement the social partner agreement, which provides for a higher level of protection of EU fishermen.

Delivering a deeper and fairer Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is one of the top priorities of European Commission President Juncker. The Five Presidents’ Report, presented on 22 June 2015, is the basis for achieving this aim within the next decade. In addition, the Commission committed itself to stimulate a broad-based consultation, facilitate discussions and open debates across the EU.

On Wednesday 27 April, the European Commission Representation in Malta joined Zabbar Primary school for a morning full of activities on their Healthy Lifestyle Day. The event followed a session previously held in class, where children learned about healthy eating through card games provided by the Representation.

On April 26, 2016 MEUSAC, in collaboration with the European Commission Representation in Malta and EkoSkola, organised the 6th Young People’s Summit, which encouraged students from 32 primary, middle and secondary schools to come together and discuss issues related to the serious effects of climate change. The plenary and closing sessions took place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta

Europe Direct Valletta Representative Elaine Zammit attended a two day training seminar in Brussels that focused on the European Commission’s 10 priorities and practical information that can be shared with the EDICs to communicate the overall message to EU citizens. At a time when Euro sceptic movements and uncertainty in the Eurozone is increasing, it is essential that communicating Europe accurately is given importance. As one of the Commission’s communicating platforms, the EDICs have a major role to explain the EC priorities and policies at local level in their respective locations in the heart of the regional communities.

On Monday 25 April, the European Commission published new figures showing that, in 2015, more than 2,000 dangerous products triggered EU-wide alerts. A key challenge is the increasing share of products bought online from outside the EU. The Commission, EU Member States and businesses are working together to ensure that these unsafe consumer goods are removed from the European market.

In response to the low levels of investment in Europe brought about by the global economic crisis, in November 2014 the European Commission launched the Investment Plan for Europe. The Investment Plan is built on three stands: the creation of a new European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), the establishment of a credible project pipeline coupled with an assistance programme and an ambitious roadmap to make Europe more attractive for investment and remove regulatory bottlenecks.
