"In my own name and on behalf of the European Commission, I congratulate Dr Joseph Muscat for the electoral result obtained. The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, also sent a congratulatory statement to the new Maltese Prime Minister:

"I salute the Maltese people who have participated in one of the most active democratic elections in Europe with over 93% voting turnout. I congratulate the Labour Party and my highly regarded former colleague Joseph Muscat for winning the trust of the Maltese people in these elections.

“The European Parliament also looks forward to working closely with the Maltese government in the run-up and the deployment of its term at the helm of the Council of the European Union in January 2017.''

In another statement, the President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda said "I extend my warmest congratulations to Joseph Muscat and the Partit Laburista. The Maltese people have made a clear choice and I am confident that 'Malta for all' as well as 'Europe for all' will become a reality under the new government.

"In today's times of growing wariness towards Europe, I am glad to see a pro-European leader and a pro-European party will govern the country," he added.

Dr Joseph Muscat was an MEP between 2004 and 2008 when he resigned to become PL Leader and Leader of the Opposition. His first EU-related engagement will be at the European Council meeting in Brussels this week. He has also appointed a new minister solely responsible for EU affairs in his new cabinet. This post was assigned to Deputy Prime Minister, PL Deputy Leader and former MEP Louis Grech.
