Over the past year and a half, the DGT field office in Malta, with the help of the Representation, has been organising a Maltese Literary evening in the capital of the country hosting the rotating presidency.

Last February, the protagonist of the Maltese Literary Evening was the winner of the EU prize for Literature, Immanuel Mifsud, and this took place in Copenhagen. Now that the Danish presidency is about to end, the DGT field office in Copenhagen reciprocated with a Danish Literary Evening in Valletta on Saturday 9th June.

The protagonist of the evening was Dan Turèll, affectionately nicknamed Onkel Danny (Uncle Danny). Turèll was a Danish cult author who developed a fascination with Malta, visiting the island regularly. Indeed Malta features heavily in the fourth crime novel of Dan Turèll's Mord-serie (Murder Series) entitled Mord på Malta (Murder in Malta).

The presentation of Onkel Danny was given by his wife Chili Turèll inside the main hall of the National Library in Valletta. She spoke about Turèll's various sources of inspiration and his admiration for the Maltese National poet Dun Karm. Turèll's poetry had little in common with that of Dun Karm yet he became fascinated with the Maltese poet and translated some of the latter's work into Danish.

The evening concluded a week of events celebrating the 200 year anniversary of this magnificent building, which is nowadays used solely as a research and reference library and which contains some very rare and finely bound books. Onkel Danny, once a regular visitor to The National Library, would have been pleased.
