In line with the Commission's ambition to move towards low and zero-emission vehicles as outlined in the European Strategy for Low-Emission Mobility adopted last Wednesday, the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed an online tool to help citizens estimate the fuel costs and CO2 emissions of their daily commute or holiday trips by car, for instance.

The European Commission today updated the 2017 work programme of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation scheme, which will invest €8.5 billion in research and innovation next year. Important novelties include the introduction of open research data in all new Horizon 2020 calls. For projects funded under the programme, free online access to scientific data will become the norm, which will boost competitiveness through open science by accelerating innovation and collaboration.

On this occasion, the European Commission Representation, in collaboration with the Strickland Foundation, is organising a Public Seminar on the European Neighbourhood Policy: The Challenges we face in the South.

The European Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensure the effective application of the whole range of European legislation and, in particular, the world's biggest single market of 500 million citizens. The Annual Report provides a clear picture on how the Commission monitored and enforced European Union law in 2015 and the Single Market Scoreboard reveals that barriers to the free movement of persons, services, goods and capital in the EU are being eliminated in most areas. The constructive compliance dialogue between the Commission and Member States increasingly leads to compliance issues being resolved without the need to resort to formal procedures.

Today, the European Commission formally proposed to the Council of the EU the signature and conclusion of a free trade agreement between the EU and Canada, known as the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA. The deal is set to benefit people and businesses – big and small – across Europe as of the first day of its implementation. To allow for a swift signature and provisional application, so that the expected benefits are reaped without unnecessary delay, the Commission has decided to propose CETA as 'mixed' agreement.
