Id-9 ta’ Mejju jimmarka l-iktar rikorrenza importanti għall-Ewropej kollha – Jum l-Ewropa. Din id-data hija l-anniversarju tad-'Dikjarazzjoni ta’ Schuman ', dikjarazzjoni storika. Waqt diskors f’Pariġi fl-1950, Robert Schuman, li dak iż-żmien kien il-Ministru Franċiż tal-Affarijiet Barranin, ippreżenta l-idea tiegħu ta’ forma ġdida ta’ kooperazzjoni politika fl-Ewropa, li kellha tagħmel il-gwerra bejn in-nazzjonijiet tal-Ewropa, xi ħaġa inkonċepibbli.

Europe has a good record when it comes to the freedom of the media. But the situation is far from perfect. Albert Camus once said: "A free press can, of course, be good or bad, but, most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad." I believe this is even more relevant in the age of digital media. The recent legislative proposals on public media service as well as the recent debate about the limits of satire both in the EU and Turkey serve as a stark reminder that the freedom and independence of the media and freedom of speech are not set in stone but are contested. If we are to protect our own precious liberties and maintain our ability to serve as a beacon for our own neighbourhood and the world, we must thus remain vigilant.

Today, following an agreement by social partners on working conditions in the fishing sector, the European Commission is translating the agreement into a legal proposal for a Directive. In 2013, the EU social partners in the fishing sector reached an agreement, which proposed to align EU law with the "Work in Fishing" Convention 2007 of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Once adopted by the Council, this directive will implement the social partner agreement, which provides for a higher level of protection of EU fishermen.

Europe Direct Valletta Representative Elaine Zammit attended a two day training seminar in Brussels that focused on the European Commission’s 10 priorities and practical information that can be shared with the EDICs to communicate the overall message to EU citizens. At a time when Euro sceptic movements and uncertainty in the Eurozone is increasing, it is essential that communicating Europe accurately is given importance. As one of the Commission’s communicating platforms, the EDICs have a major role to explain the EC priorities and policies at local level in their respective locations in the heart of the regional communities.
