Today EU Member States agreed on the Commission's proposal to invest €444 million in priority European energy infrastructure projects. The 18 selected electricity, smart grids and gas projects will contribute to achieving the Energy Union's goals by connecting European energy networks, increasing security of energy supply, and contributing to the sustainable development by integrating renewable energy sources across the EU.

Today, the European Parliament voted in favour of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada, concluding the ratification process of this deal at the EU level.

All EU Member States' economies set to grow in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Having proven resilient to global challenges last year, the European economic recovery is expected to continue this year and next: for the first time in almost a decade, the economies of all EU Member States are expected to grow throughout the entire forecasting period (2016, 2017 and 2018). However, the outlook is surrounded by higher-than-usual uncertainty.

On 8 and 9 February the Senior Officials Meeting on the state of play of the implementation of the Joint Valletta Action Plan will take place in Valletta, Malta. High Representative/ Vice-President Federica Mogherini will open the meeting that will focus on the next steps in EU-Africa relations on migration.

Today, millions of people in 120 countries are participating in the Safer Internet Day. The 2017 motto is "Be the change: unite for a better internet". In this spirit, the European Commission, tech and telecoms companies, broadcasters, NGOs and UNICEF (who all form the Alliance to Better Protect Minors Online) will unveil today a self-regulatory initiative to address harmful content, conduct and contact online.

Today, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker is participating in the informal Malta Summit in Valletta. The main focus of discussions will be on how to better manage migration and save lives along the Central Mediterranean route. Leaders are expected to agree on a concrete set of short- and medium term actions which will help stabilise the Central Mediterranean route.

As the last step towards the end of roaming charges by 15 June 2017, representatives of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission agreed on how to regulate wholesale roaming markets (the prices operators charge each other when their customers use other networks when roaming in the EU).

Modernising and simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), one of the European Union's longstanding policies, will allow it to better respond to today's social, political, environmental and economic challenges. The European Commission today launched the first phase of the modernisation and simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) with the opening of a three-month public consultation.
