Initiatives worldwide

The European language label is awarded to initiatives that successfully promote creative and innovative language-learning activities.

Many winners have been in the field of early language learning:

Austria-Italy-Slovenia

Three hands (Drei Hände / Tri roke / Tre mani) – in the 3 affiliated kindergartens (one in each of the 3 countries), children do activities in their second and third languages once a week.
Sprachenberatung – mobile language consultants support pre-primary teachers in language learning.

Denmark

Sprog fra vuggen – DVDs and CDs of lullabies for young children in Turkish, Danish, Greek, Czech, English, Italian and Romanian.
Undervisningsmetoder til tidlig sprogindlæring – video/audio educational materials for young children.

Ireland

Playgroup Italiano – parents and children meet to play and learn – all activities are carried out in Italian.

Latvia

Interactive ABC – introduction to letters in the Latvian, Russian, English and French languages for children from 2 years upwards - and adults of all ages.

Poland

Tolerance - Get Together – children become familiar with the sound of foreign languages and learn about other cultures.
Young Scientist – children expand their knowledge of the surrounding world through simple experiments, observations and tests – in English – to discover the rules of nature.

Portugal

Jazz Mataz - Music & Fun – children acquire a new language through music/songs stimulating their development.

United Kingdom

A world of books – awareness of other languages is raised through repeating words and actions to songs, games, puppet shows and plays performed by the children.
BBC – Cbeebies – Lingo Show – television programme for pre-schoolers to discover and learn other languages through games and other activities. Teaches Welsh, French and Spanish words in a playful way.

United States

TED – linguistic genius of babies – an expert linguist explains how children can hear and mimic multiple sounds and learn languages easily in their early years.
