The importance of creative and less conventional devices - theatre, songs, videos - within a language learning classroom
Emotions and feelings are too often kept out of language courses, as if learning would involve only the rational part of an individual. Consequently, the learner does not feel involved and often has only a passive role in the learning process. The increase in ICT and the resulting transformation in our patterns of communication, as well as the increasing number of migrants have led to the need for new didactic and methodological answers. These fundamental issues can be dealt with by proposing innovative approaches based on drama, songs, video and other tools.
Considering the actual status quo of creativity issues in language learning, the originality of the project Creativity in Language learning lies thus in providing a common framework where every single 'creative experience' is explained, put in relation with the original targeted audience and evaluated in its ability to deal with other target groups. (e.g. whether drama can be useful also with adults or immigrants).
The project is also in line with the principle of multilingualism: there are five target languages (English, French, German, Italian and Bulgarian), four national matching sessions, two newsletters, two special issues of a periodical, a multilingual website, one international conference of dissemination and a course for teachers/trainers interested in exploring creative approaches to language teaching. The website contains a virtual library consisting of the best creative practices implemented in European projects.
The project’s target groups include school teachers (foreign language teachers in particular) and other educational workers who work with children and young people; school principals, adult educators, life-long learning providers and students, as well as decision-makers from different levels of the educational systems in the project partner countries.
Thanks to this project, financed by the European Union through the transversal programme (Key Activity 2-Languages), European foreign language teachers and trainers will have the opportunity to use creative approaches in their classrooms using some of the best practices inserted in the website.
