531 literary works for close to 2.9 million Euros will be translated this year with the support of the Culture Programme.
Every year, the Culture Programme supports the translation of high-quality European literature from one European language into another. Publishers can propose up to 10 books of fiction to be translated. In 2012 the highest numbers of successful applicants came from Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and the Netherlands.
The dedicated work of literary translators allows the introduction of European authors to a wider audience. The literary works to be translated vary from classics like Emma by Jane Austin to new authors.
Thanks to the support of the EU programme, books can be translated into several language combinations: from Norwegian into Hungarian, from Montenegrin into Albanian, from Turkish into Bosnian and many more.
