An International Conference Against Death Penalty, organised jointly by the European Commission, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Council of Europe, takes place on the 9th of October. The European Union thus reaffirms its longstanding commitment to protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, which brings it to the forefront of international efforts to abolish the death penalty worldwide.
EU Member States and the European Union are strongly opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances. The European Commission has consistently stressed that the abolition of the death penalty contributes to the enhancement of human dignity and the progressive development of human rights.
