Violence towards migrant women - professional strategies on the cultural approach
Research and strategies aimed at professionals on how to provide the best possible support to minorities, immigrants and refugees, particularly women exposed to violence.
Comments
The main objectives of this project were to identify new strategies to meet the basic needs of migrant Muslim women exposed to violence, and to show how the professionals involved in their support could best accomplish their professional duties. The results can be summarised as follows: the key focus was put on identifying strategies of prevention, especially how young women themselves negotiate interculturally between their parents and social agents. This was achieved by putting together studies, books and brochures, and through a number of professional exchanges among the partners. The particularly high level of the partnership helped in achieving maximum impact in this respect, as did the use of an international network of researchers. The intensified networking at the European level was made possible by the non-political character of the project on a very sensitive issue. The quality of the products positively influenced political circles and leaders who were exposed to a new presentation and wording of an issue they are generally reluctant to deal with.
Books, brochures and articles in various reviews were produced to disseminate the scientific findings and professional strategies on the cultural approach to be followed when handling the problems met by minorities, immigrants and refugees. A number of meetings and seminars took place in all the partner countries and a conference for professionals concluded the exercise.
Lessons and Ideas
The project reported that the academic partners, who were not used to working under (unnecessary) pressure, resisted the very tight schedule imposed by the project. However, the quality of work they produced was instrumental in delivering products adapted to the objectives and to the needs of the target beneficiaries. It was also useful that many researchers associated with the project themselves came from various cultural environments, allowing a quick and adequate response to the research requirements.
