As the last Eurobarometer on this topic in 2012, the survey looks into attitudes and perceptions of Europeans towards discrimination based on different grounds (gender, ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, age, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity) and citizens' opinions on different policy measures to combat discrimination. For the first time the survey explores the social acceptance of specific groups belonging to ethnic and religious minorities. Also for the first the survey is looking into social acceptance and citizens' views on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.

This report examines the existing legal frameworks prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination, at international as well as European and national levels. The particular focus of the report is on the relevant provisions of the Employment Equality Directive, the case-law of the Court of Justice of the EU and on the practical implementation at national level in all Member States. The publication of this report is particularly timely in view of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 17th May.

Brussels, 23 May 2012 – The European Commission has called on EU Member States, in a report adopted today, to implement their national strategies to improve the economic and social integration of Europe's 10 to 12 million Roma. Member States developed these plans in response to the Commission's EU Framework for national Roma integration strategies adopted on 5 April 2011 which was endorsed by EU leaders soon afterwards.
1 in 6 Europeans have some sort of disability. This should not be an obstacle to their equal access to jobs, public services or new technology. The Roma are the largest ethnic minority in Europe. As equal EU citizens, they enjoy the same rights as everyone else in Europe, and should be allowed to enjoy them without facing discrimination or exclusion.
The European Commission celebrates the European Day of Persons with Disabilities with an annual conference, organised in close cooperation with the European Disability Forum. The conference is part of the EU's wider efforts to promote the mainstreaming of disability issues.

The European Commission launched the 2011 competition of the EU Journalist Award – Together against discrimination! The award – the only competition for print and online journalists focused on discrimination and diversity issues in the EU – recognises journalists who contribute to a better public understanding of diversity and discrimination issues in the EU. The EU-wide winner and the two runners up will receive vouchers with a value of €5,000, €3,500 and €2,500, respectively. Registration deadline: 10 November 2011 at 12.00 (midday-CET).
