28 January 2011 Joint High Level meeting on Data Protection “Data protection (30 years later): from European to international standards”

On 28 January 2011, the European Commission, the Council of Europe and its Member States will celebrate Data Protection Day for the fifth time.

Data protection issues, including their cross-border dimension, are for ever present in individuals' lives – at work, in their relations with public authorities, in the health field, when they buy goods or services, when they travel or surf the Internet.

Nevertheless, many individuals are unfamiliar with data protection issues and unaware of their rights in this respect. Moreover, data protection does not usually feature in the curricula of schools and universities.

On the occasion of Data Protection Day 2011, events will be organised not only in Europe, but all over the world to raise awareness on data protection and inform citizens of their rights and good practices, thereby enabling them to exercise these rights more effectively. It presents an opportunity for individuals to become more aware of personal data protection and what their rights and responsibilities are in that regard.

01 July 2010 Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on the Review of the Data Protection Regulatory Framework

As a follow up to the public consultation launched in 2009 on the review of the data protection regulatory framework, the European Commission is carrying out targeted consultation meetings with a number of key stakeholders.

The purpose of this meeting is to consult non-public sector stakeholders on a range of issues pertaining to existing data protection rules, identify problems and discuss possible solutions.

  • The meeting will take place on 1 July 2010, from 10.00-17.00.
  • A background paper PDF File [36 KB] containing a series of questions, divided by themes, whose purpose is to guide and structure the discussion at the meeting, is available.

1-2 July 2010 "EU Citizens' Rights – The way forward"

The European Commission organises the conference "EU Citizens' Rights – The way forward" to take stock of the progress made in the area of Union citizenship since its inception, and to look at what still remains to be done to make citizens' rights easily accessible and tangible on the ground.

The discussion also follows the public consultation with the same name, intended to enquire about the concrete obstacles citizens face when exercising their rights and the measures which could be introduced to remove them.

This event is a unique opportunity to seek and gain valuable insight and input from citizens, civil society, academics and policy-makers in remedying these obstacles.

The ideas that emerge from this conference will feed into the Citizenship report scheduled for October 2010, which should contain a roadmap of the actions the Commission will be implementing in order to overcome the obstacles citizens face in exercising their rights.

12 November 2009 Workshop on the Economic Benefits of PETs

The European Commission has launched a study on the economic benefits of PETs. The Workshop will present the interim report of this study, which is currently being carried out by London Economics. It will also give the opportunity to a broad spectrum of stakeholders to share their experience with PETs. We hope that participants will provide us with practical examples as to whether PETs work or not, how their deployment can be beneficial to all of us. This Workshop is designed for PETs stakeholders (developers, deployers, public authorities, users/consumers). In order to create a working atmosphere, Workshop will be limited to the participation of only 50 experts.

19-20 May 2009 "Personal data - more use, more protection?", 19-20 May 2009. Deutsch PDF File (PDF File 28 KB) français PDF File (PDF File 17 KB)

The European Commission organises a personal data use and protection conference to look at new challenges for privacy.

How should personal data be protected in a globalised world with increased mobility and in the wake of modern communication and information technologies and new policies? Which data is accessed and exchanged by public authorities and private companies? How well are current rules on international transfers of personal data working in a time of “cloud computing”? What are the expectations of individuals and business and society as a whole? These and other topical questions will be addressed by a conference on the use, exchange and protection of personal data in the EU, organised by the European Commission, which will take place in Brussels on 19 and 20 May 2009.

Interested individuals, business leaders, consumer associations, academics, data protection supervisors and public authorities from both the EU and third countries are invited to take part.

Among the speakers will be the Vice-president of the European Commission in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, Mr Jacques Barrot.

The conference will give the opportunity to various stakeholders to express their views and questions on the new challenges for data protection and the need for an effective information management strategy in the EU. The conference is part of the Commission’s open consultation on how the fundamental right to protection of personal data can be further developed and effectively respected, in particular in the area of freedom, justice and security.

Interpretation will be provided in English, French and German.
