Since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the Charter of Fundamental Rights is regularly taken into consideration in the judgments of the Court of the Justice.
Before the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, the Court of Justice recognised that fundamental rights are enshrined in the general principles of Union law and are protected by the Court:
