The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination commemorates that day in 1960 when police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid "pass laws" in Sharpeville, South Africa. The Day came into being in 1966 when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. It aims to remind people around the world of their collective responsibility for promoting and protecting the ideal set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.

Against Discrimination.’ campaign works to promote the benefits that a diverse workforce can bring to employers, especially small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that make up the vast majority of European companies. The campaign has produced a guide for SME managers that provides information on how employees from diverse backgrounds can strengthen a business, as well as practical advice, for example, on how to recruit from a wider pool of talent.
